L3_S18_ Sentences with  Articles Articles are words that identify a noun as being specific or unspecific. In English, there are three articles: a, an, and the. The indefinite article (a, an) is used before a noun that is general or when its identity is not known. ‘a’ is used before a singular noun beginning with a consonant sound. ‘an’ is used before a singular noun beginning with a vowel sound. The definite article (the) is used before a specific noun to indicate its identity, which is already known to the reader. ‘the’ is used before a singular or plural noun that is specific. There are three different kinds of compound: open, closed, and hyphenated compound words. Open compound words are written with spaces between the individual words. Closed compound words are written without hyphens or spaces. Hyphenated compound words are written with hyphens connecting the words.
