L3_S18_ Sentences with Articles

Articles are words that identify a noun as being specific or unspecific. In English, there are three articles: a, an, and the.

The indefinite article (a, an) is used before a noun that is general or when its identity is not known.

‘a’ is used before a singular noun beginning with a consonant sound.

‘an’ is used before a singular noun beginning with a vowel sound.

The definite article (the) is used before a specific noun to indicate its identity, which is already known to the reader.

‘the’ is used before a singular or plural noun that is specific.

Articles help to know whether a noun is specific or general, as well as whether a noun is singular in a sentence.
