A preposition is a word placed generally before a noun or pronoun to denote its relation to some other word. preposition is a word that indicates the relationship between a noun and the other words of a sentence. They explain relationships of sequence, space, and logic between the object of the sentence and the rest of the sentence.

Types of Prepositions

Based on the different uses and functions of prepositions, they can be divided into four main types. They are as follows:

·         Prepositions of Time – used to show when something is happening.

·         Prepositions of Place – indicate the place or position of something.

·         Prepositions of Direction (Movement) – used to denote the direction in which something travels or moves.

·         Prepositions of Manner – these depict how things happen and how something is done.

·         Prepositions of Measure – this comments on the quantity or quality of something.

·         Prepositions of Source – used to denote an object’s movement away from the source and towards a source.

·         Prepositions of Possession (/ Agent of Instrument) – these words imply the ownership of an object or article/ imply the responsibility over someone or something.

·         Prepositional Phrase – a combination of a preposition and other words (usually the object it is affecting).

Prepositions affect the meaning of the sentences and are used to understand them in their context and purpose through the relationships between words.

·         Prepositions of Time- We will be meeting on Friday.

·         Prepositions of Place- Henry hid behind the door.

·         Prepositions of Direction (Movement)- Neena lives across the street.

·         Prepositions of Manner – He always walks by the side of the leader.

·         Prepositions of Measure – Give a half bowl of food.

·         Prepositions of Source – The banyan tree is from India.

·         Prepositions of Possession (/ Agent of Instrument) – This property belongs to the Government.

·         Prepositional Phrase- See to it that you reach the venue on time.
