of Comparison
Degrees
of Comparison are used when we
compare one person or one thing with another.
There
are three Degrees of Comparison
in English. They are:
1.
Positive degree.
When
we speak about only one person or thing, we use the Positive degree.
Example:
This house is big.
No
other house on this street is as big as this one. (Positive)
2.
Comparative degree.
When
we compare two or more persons or things with each other, we use both the Positive degree and the Comparative degree.
Example: This
house is bigger than that one. (Comparative)
That
house is not as big as this house (Positive)
3.
Superlative degree:
When
we compare more than two persons or things, we use all the Positive, Comparative, and Superlative degrees.
Example:
This is the biggest house on this street. (Superlative)
Illustration
The first apple I have is Big.
The
second apple I have is bigger than the first apple.
The
third apple I have is the biggest among the three apples.
Activity
1.
Identify the Degree of Comparison of the Statements.

She is smarter than her sister.

that.

Reena is smarter than any student in
her category.
7.

This masterpiece is the second
richest temple in the Asian nation.
9.
Australia is slightly smaller than
the continent.
10. This

2. Collect 2 or 3 items of the same category.
Collect
two or three objects of the same kind but not identical (For example- 3 pens of
different brands). Explain the two or three items (their uniqueness,
characteristics, and comparison), that you have with you. You may write about it.
Extra Task
Choose
at least 3 leaders you like or 3 personalities in your life and write about
them, also comparing their attributes and qualities. At the end conclude the
best qualities and attributes you know in the people you chose (200 words/
A4 page). Share it with your friends/facilitators in English by talking about
that.
