ENGLISH MODULES- IMPLEMENTATION

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

We need approximately 30 minutes for one activity. Our objective is to improve Literacy Skills. Thirty topics are taught and four assessments are conducted for the students who learn using the English Modules. 

Also, the Content is in 3 levels: Level 1 (I-II Standard Level); Level 2 (III-IV Standard Level); Level 3 (V-VI Standard Level).

PRELIMINARY REQUISITES

Gather the children together by mobilizing, and meeting community leaders and parents. Or already engage the children who are gathered or in a formal institution.

Note: The Pre-Assessment is just for the facilitator (s) to know what the students know and what they don’t know. Students are not expected to know everything, because the same content will be followed in the first term. The other 3 Assessments will be based on the content being taught. Still, it is not expected from the students to know everything after it has been taught. It is okay for a student to follow the ELC Modules of the same Level for two successive years, as the content covers two standards (or grades), i.e. for example Level 1 has Class 1 and Class 2 content. Since students have different learning abilities with varying attendance, the facilitators are expected to properly discrete and understand students. 

Pre- Assessment is conducted compulsorily once a student joins the ELC, to assess and admit the student in the right group. The content and assessments shall be followed along with other students, according to the term they are in.

The assessments of the students shall also be evaluated by interchanging answer papers, as the facilitator explains the solutions, so that evaluation will be done sooner, and also the students will know the solutions. Also, it makes the students reflect more about the question and improves their higher-order cognitive skills. The younger students may not be able to interchange and evaluate, and in that case, the older students who are above Level 3, shall support in evaluation. 

EVALUATION AND FOLLOW-UP

  1. The minimum mark is 7 out of 10 to qualify for the level’s / Term’s content.
  2. There are open-ended questions and close-ended questions to check the student’s knowledge, understanding, and application of the content taught. 
  3. Students who find it difficult to learn certain topics shall be identified using their assessment record and performance, and an action of remedy shall be arranged. 

Note: The facilitators should be diligent in Evaluation, especially the evaluation of open-ended questions. They shall get the help of superiors whenever it is needed, however simple or basic it could be, rather than assuming something to be right or wrong based on their perception. Students will be able to improve themselves and try to use their learning only when they get the right feedback after evaluation. 

The Assessment Marks shall be recorded in the Track sheet. 

FORMING GROUPS

  1. Though the Assessment helps to Categorize Levels, it need not be told to the students. 
  2. Instead of using the word ‘level’, Students shall be told that they are part of some Group (Group 1, 2, or 3, or the group shall be given some name, color, or anything), to avoid discrimination or inferior & superior feelings among children. 

Note: The student’s Level may change at the end of any of the Assessments and the student’s group shall be changed accordingly. 

CONTENT OF THE TOPICS AND IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER

  1. Topic/ Theme (With the code containing Level and Serial Number- Example: L1_S1)
  2. Introduction/ Definition (To Know& understand)
  3. Example/ Illustration/ Model Activity (To connect) (1, 2 &3 will be taught by facilitators)
  4. Activity (ies)/ Exercise (s) (Preferably to evaluate for 10 Marks/ Points or its multiples) (To Apply & for us to track their learning) (Students will do individually immediately after the teaching) 
  5. Extra Activity (ies) (To remember and apply continuously) (Students will do individually/ with someone in the center or at home)

Note: The Format of the Content is being standardized and it is in process, though half of the content would be in the format mentioned above. So Facilitators shall try to fill the gaps that they identify, at present. If they need any support, they shall seek the help of coordinators. 

There shall be students in Level 0 and students above Level 3. For those students, some other activities shall be given. 

Each Activity/ Exercise shall be evaluated for a score of 10 (The number of 1 mark questions shall not be less than 5 and more than 20) and recorded in the Track sheet to look at the learning progress in different topics. 

The facilitators shall engage children actively throughout the implementation of the modules. On average, each of the module content requires about 10-15 minutes for teaching and another 5-10 minutes for the activities. Some children might complete it earlier, those children shall do some extra activities based on the content or use what is been given in the activity sheets, as applicable. Also, some other general activities shall be given for their betterment. 

The activities done by the students based on the topics shall also be evaluated by interchanging notebooks or papers, as the facilitator explains the solutions, to save time on evaluation. Also, it makes the students reflect more about the topic and improves their higher-order cognitive skills. The younger students may not be able to interchange and evaluate, and in that case, the older students who are above Level 3, shall support in evaluation.
