L3_S11_ Sentences with Verbs

Verbs are words that show an action, occurrence, or state of being. Almost every sentence requires a verb. Verbs can be expressed in different tenses, depending on when the action is performed.

Verbs are also classified according to function.

·         Action verbs show action or possession. Action verbs are either transitive or intransitive.

·         Linking verbs show the condition of the subject.

·         Auxiliary verbs, also called helping verbs, are used with other verbs to change the tense, voice, or condition of the verb.

·         Conditional verbs are conjugated with could, would, or should, to show a possible condition. They may be in any tense.

Note: Auxiliary verbs and Conditional verbs can be together called helping verbs.

The principal parts of a verb are the four forms of the verb from which all forms of the verb can be made. In English, the four principal parts are the present (or infinitive), the past tense, the past participle, and the present participle. infinitive is the base form of a verb with to. A participle is a verb that ends in -ing (present participle) or -ed, -d, -t, -en, -n (past participle). Since the present participle is always formed similarly (add -ing), some lists of principal parts omit it.

Without a Verb, a sentence would be incomplete and unable to express its intended meaning clearly. Verbs are important because they: Convey the primary action or state of the subject in the sentence.
